I sat down with Shad to talk about his experiences, perspectives, and evolution of his industry.

How did you get to this position?
My interests were pretty diverse and I ended up contracting, freelancing a lot, and working at other agencies,

My advice for students is keep your student loans down...Your number one goal should be coming out of school without a lot of debt burden because that debt will be more detrimental to your creativity and the freedom it requires. Mario soma, I know a lot of agencies that think they're pioneering everything they do and that's sad...You want to be ground-breaking and pushing things forward, but if you try to coin a phrase for everything you do, you're (probably) going to be an insufferable person.
How do you get most of your business?
It's all word of mouth,

But I like to make a point saying that you can't be a good creator and consumer at the same time. There has to be some consumption but I'd rather spend my time making things than watching things. I'll read books because my wife loves to read so much and that's something we can do together.

Are you working because you're trying to meet a deadline or because it's just what you do?
It's what I do. I stopped apologizing for trying to be normal in search for the work and life balance...This is what I want to be doing. If you ask me how I spend my free time, this (job) is it. I haven't been on a real vacation in 4 or 5 years.
Buying Soma, Most of my vacations are conventions and other meetings. I just had a baby so that changes things, but when I try to figure out how to spend time with my child, the solution I come up with is giving him an internship.
What are you working on right now?
San Diego Comic-Con is coming up and everyone goes. We're working on so many things. We've got two internal games right now and a couple of client games that are going to be a lot of fun. We're working with Robert Schneider, from Apples and Stereo to do a kid's show for him...I'm also really excited about the Yo Gabba Gabba art gallery show at Pink Hobo,

If you had to hire someone next week, what you be looking for. Assume that talent is a given.
I would like to find an assistant in that "Hollywood" kind-of-way. Somebody that works with me but for me. In Minneapolis, there isn't the culture of that. People don't understand what that is. It's not a secretary, I'm looking for a "mini-me" who wants to learn the ropes with the end goal of starting a company and putting me out of business.
